WASHINGTON — Beaufort County’s old courthouse (now BHM Library) is one of only three surviving Federalist Period courthouses left in North Carolina. The bell tower/clock and the back two window bays were later additions. It dates from about 1820. The other two are in Gatesville and Hertford.
