Built in 1907, the Norfolk Southern Pamlico River trestle is a Washington landmark. In case you’ve never seen it operate, here’s your chance. It is now motorized, but as late as about 1990, it was still operated by a hand with a turnstile type wrench. Things are much simpler now with a bridge tender going out to meet scheduled trains rather than staying on the bridge full time.
